DERMA FILLER QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

These skin supplements help to fill the deep wrinkles of the face. They are approved specifically for those creases in and around the mouth. In recent years, there has been so much experimentation with these substances that we now use them for a multitude of other areas. They can be used to enhance lips, cheeks, temples, and other areas. Some of the more common skin fillers include Juvederm, Restylane, and Radiesse and now Juvederm Voluma.

The physical make-up and longevity of each are a little different, but it is safe to say that depending on where they are injected and the experience of the injector, these products can last for nine to 17 months with Voluma which is clinically proven to last up to 2 years with optimal treatment. Some people metabolize (use them up) faster than others so they may not last as long.*

Dermal fillers should be used in conjunction with Botox and similar substances in order to create the best outcome. Additionally, adding laser treatments also enhances the effect by treating the skin’s texture and tightness.*

Most patients say the injections don’t hurt, or very little at all. The skin fillers we use at The Blume Skin Centre are mixed with lidocaine, a numbing medication that eases any discomfort.* Additionally, we use a specially developed topical numbing cream for patient comfort. When the numbing combination wears off, there may be a little tenderness easily treated with Tylenol.

There are a number of ways to minimize any discomfort associated with fillers. A master expert injector will know how to inject with great technique. Comfort is helped by:

  • Properly using numbing lotions before injections
  • Great technique learned over the years decreases much pain
  • Using micro-cannulas also decrease pain. These are thin hollow tubes without a needle used to insert fillers into the skin and tissue below the skin. It takes an expert to use these properly.
The most common side effects to skin fillers are redness, bruising, and swelling. There is the possibility of lumps or migration (moving) of material, but these are dramatically reduced with expert injectors treating patients. This is most commonly seen with new or inexperienced injectors. Allergic reactions are extremely rare and side effects are discussed with a patient prior to injections.*
Following dermal filler injections it is not advisable to drink alcohol in excess or do any exercise. Either (especially the exercise) will lead to a greater chance of swelling. It is also recommended that no massage be performed in those areas for a few days at the minimum.

* Results may vary from person to person.
