Still have some questions about BOTOX®? Here are some answers to common questions that we are often asked:
How does BOTOX® work?
BOTOX® works to reduce wrinkles by temporarily disconnecting the “power” from the nerve to the muscle so that the muscle does not work for a short time and can’t cause the wrinkles.
Is BOTOX® a poison?
No. BOTOX® is one of the seven proteins produced by the Botulism Bacteria. The protein is purified and used to be a wrinkle reducer. IT IS NOT THE BACTERIA.
BOTOX® is one of the most studied drugs in the world. While it is a toxin, it is not a poison! In approved and studied doses, BOTOX® is safe and effective.
Will my wrinkles be worse if I stop using BOTOX®?
No, your wrinkles will go back to their original state if you stop using BOTOX®.
How long has BOTOX® been around?
In one name or another, BOTOX® has been around well over 45 years! When originally used for eye problems such as strabismus or blepharospasm, doctors noted that the wrinkles around the eyes began to go away. Studies were done and BOTOX® got FDA approval in 2002 for cosmetic purposes. It continues to be studied in other areas for cosmetic uses. BOTOX® is one of the most studied drugs in the world.
What are the side effects and how long do they last?
The most common side effect of BOTOX® is a droopy eyelid (known as “ptosis”) or a droopy eyebrow. It is only common in 1% of the population treated and in the hands of a good injector, happens even less. A droopy eyelid can last a few weeks if the BOTOX® is injected properly, but may last as long as three months if injected improperly.* That is a reason to go to an experienced injector.
There are no long-term side effects from BOTOX®. Once injected, the toxin is completely out of the skin in 2.5 to 5 months and leaves you in the same place as before injections.
Sometimes, BOTOX® may cause a headache for a day or two. Most often, BOTOX® reduces the headaches caused by muscle contraction.*
Does BOTOX® spread to other parts of the body?
When injected in cosmetic doses for wrinkle reduction, BOTOX® is not found in other parts of the body.
How well does BOTOX® work for frown lines between your eyebrows?
BOTOX® is extremely effective for the “11s” between the eyes. If these lines are deep from long-standing frowning, one may need an additional minimally invasive procedure to fix, but once done, keeping up with BOTOX® injections will prevent them from reforming.
How long does it take to see results from BOTOX®?
You typically start to see results after BOTOX® somewhere between 2 to 9 days. Most see results in 2 to 6 days. It won’t take long to get the benefits.
Are there ways to get BOTOX® that looks natural?
A good injector can adjust the BOTOX® dose to give the desired result. She or he can inject BOTOX® to reduce lines while keeping the motion of the muscles. Whether it’s BOTOX® under the eyes or BOTOX® for neck wrinkles, we can make it look natural.
Where can I get BOTOX® treatment?
There are many places to get BOTOX®, so choose carefully. Make sure the person injecting has experience and performs this procedure regularly. It’s a procedure that requires knowledge and care, so make sure the doctor you choose has it!
How long does BOTOX® last?
While the effects of BOTOX® can vary from person to person, the results from treatment can typically last between three to four months*. After that point, muscle action begins to return, and lines and wrinkles become visible again. The effects may also differ based on the area of injection and the dosage.
